# Turning on and off, and charging  ### Turn on the digital handpan by holding down the POWER button for 2 seconds. (On the Mutant instrument, the LED above the button lights up.) In 10 seconds the Neotone title, the serial number of the instrument and the firmware version will appear on the LCD screen. *Editor's note: the One has no screen; the title, serial number and firmware version appear on the Mutant only.*  *Editor's note: screenshot likely outdated, the LCD layout has changed.* The instrument will boot the last used scale, which can take a couple of more seconds. On the mutant instrument, the initial screen after turning ON the instrument will shown as below:  *Editor's note: screenshot likely outdated, the LCD layout has changed.* ### Turn off the digital handpan by holding down the POWER button for 2 seconds (The RED/GREEN light next to the POWER button will start blinking). On the Mutant model, the “SHUTTING DOWN” title will appear on the LCD screen. All together, the turning off procedure will approximately take 30 seconds.  *Editor's note: screenshot likely outdated, the LCD layout has changed.* If during the shutting down procedure the instrument is still connected to the WiFi, it may automatically download the available new scales. This downloading process could take a couple of minutes. On the Mutant model, a progress bar will show the process on the LCD screen. The Status Icon LED on the top will turn orange.  *Editor's note: screenshot likely outdated, the LCD layout has changed.* The downloading process can be interrupted by pressing down the power button again, in which case the download will continue where it left off at the next time when the instrument is turned off. On a Mutant instrument, in this case “UPDATE SUSPENDED” appears on the LCD screen. The process may also be interrupted in the case of low battery charge.  *Editor's note: screenshot likely outdated, the LCD layout has changed.* Firmware updates arrive the same way. When the instrument shuts down it asks the server for a newer firmware, downloads it, and installs it the next time it is turned on. The LCD screen shows the version number with UPDATING while it downloads and UPDATED once it is ready to install, and the power light on the bottom panel blinks slowly during the download. A firmware update is skipped when the battery is below 5%, a scale update when it is below 20%. You can turn updates off with the [[4-1-instrument-menu#Updates|Updates]] switch in the Instrument menu. ### Power supply A 12V 24W cabled power supply is included with the instrument, but it also runs on an internal battery for approximately 8 hours, when fully charged. It is recommended to charge the digital handpan from a power supply if a main power source is available, especially during a live performance, to avoid the possible discharge of the instrument's battery. ### Status information on the Mutant instrument  *Editor's note: screenshot likely outdated, the LCD layout has changed.* Music note icon: - Normal note -> Normal scale - Double note -> Mutant scale - Circle -> Recording, with the elapsed time next to the scale name - Diamond -> MIDI recording - Three lines -> Audio and MIDI recording together - Arrow -> A Quick Load combination is being held - Spinner -> A scale is loading Selected scale: - Name of the selected scale (and the optional pitch between -12 ... +12 tones) Names longer than the screen scroll across it.
