# MIDI Mapping Menu If you want to use the instrument as an ergonomic MIDI keyboard you need to connect it to another MIDI device or computer.  It is possible to create several different MIDI SETs at the same time. (SET 1 - 9.) You can activate a MIDI SET on the instrument by holding down the right side of the ding and tonefield #1 simultaneously for 2 seconds. For example, hold down the ding and tonefield #3 to select MIDI set 3. The MIDI map of the instrument can be configured via the visual MIDI editor on the interface. You can assign specific MIDI notes separately for the dome, ding, marked sections of the body, and the 9 side notes (or an additional 9 mutant notes in the case of a mutant instrument). To assign notes to specific areas, select a musical note and an octave combination, then click on the desired field on the instrument. There are three special indicators among the musical notes: Handpan icon: When selected, it always plays the MIDI note corresponding to the active handpan scale. Delete icon: This allows you to remove existing MIDI notes from specific areas. The Stop all midi icon can be found from firmware version 6.8 and it’s functioning as a panic button, stopping all MIDI signals. This button can be assigned to a tonefield.  Additionally, with the “HANDPAN NOTE” section, you can decide whether the handpan sound should be played together with a specific MIDI note or not. The background colors of the assigned areas indicate these options: White area: The section does not send MIDI messages. Gray area: In these sections, the handpan sound is played along with the MIDI note through the audio output. Red area: In these sections, only the MIDI note is played, and the handpan sound does not play through the audio output. - The MIDI setup page now allows the use of Control Change (CC) messages. An area can therefore send either a note or a control change, and the firmware accepts program change as well, though the editor does not yet offer it. ### MIDI set Function: Holds one complete map of the instrument, and there are nine of them. Each set carries its own name, note assignments, channel and note-off behaviour, so the instrument can be one thing for a hardware synth and another for a computer without re-editing anything. Sets are switched on the instrument by holding the ding and a tonefield, or here in the interface. ### Set name Function: Names a set, so it can be recognised in the list here and on the instrument's screen when you switch to it. ### MIDI method Function: Decides when a note ends. This is the setting that makes the Neotone feel like a keyboard or like a handpan to whatever is receiving it, and it is usually the first thing to change if held notes behave unexpectedly. On the MIDI setup page, you have three choices for how Note Off behaves: - CLOSED – Note active only while holding the tonefield - OPEN – Note active until aftertouch - FLOW – Note Off when a new note or chord begins  ### MIDI channel Function: Sets the MIDI channel the whole set transmits on, from 1 to 16. One channel serves every area in the set; a second synth on its own channel needs a second set. ### Note assignment Function: Puts a MIDI note on a striking area. Choose a note name and octave, then click the area you want it on. Twenty-six areas can be assigned: the ding, the dome, the nine side tonefields, the nine mutant tonefields on a Mutant instrument, and six zones covering the eighteen body areas. #### Handpan icon Function: Makes an area follow the loaded scale instead of a fixed note, so the same MIDI set stays musically correct when you change scale. #### Delete icon Function: Clears the assignment from an area, so it sends nothing. #### Stop all midi Function: A panic button that stops all MIDI output, assignable to a tonefield so it can be reached while playing. Firmware 6.8 and later. ### Handpan note Function: Decides whether an area still sounds the instrument's own audio as well as sending MIDI. The editor colours each area by its state: white sends no MIDI, grey sends MIDI and plays the handpan, red sends MIDI only.
