# External Control Menu
In this menu the Neotone instrument’s main technical features can be controlled. The main audio and MIDI inputs and outputs can be controlled here.
### MIDI control
#### Calibrate padals/knobs
*The interface spells this link "Calibrate padals/knobs" (control.tpl.php:89). The manual keeps the spelling for parity until the template is corrected.*
Function: Teaches the instrument the full travel of each pedal. Click it, then press each pedal all the way to both end positions; on a Mutant the pedal value is also shown on the LCD screen, and the instrument confirms with PEDAL 1 ADJUSTED, PEDAL 2 ADJUSTED or BOTH PEDAL ADJUSTED. Below each pedal's reading, Curve 1 (LIN), Curve 2 (LOG) and Curve 3 (ILOG) choose how the expression pedal's travel maps to the value it controls, and Flip reverses the end positions.
Press the pedals all the way to both end positions. You’ll see the pedal value also displayed on the LCD screen. If the response curve of the expression pedal doesn’t look right, try switching between the curve presets. If needed, you can reverse the end positions using the Flip option.
#### Connecting sliders to knobs / foot pedals
Function: Assigns any of the instrument's settings to a panel knob or a pedal, so it can be changed by hand or foot while playing rather than through the interface.
Most of the sliders and switches can be paired up with a bottom panel knob or foot pedal. This function allows you to change any settings on the interface by physically making adjustments on the instrument (no WiFi connection needed). For example, if you have paired up KNOB 1 with the volume slider, even when the instrument is not connected to WiFi, you can adjust the volume by physically turning KNOB 1.
You can select a parameter which you like to pair up to a knob or foot pedal. You can select the empty option if you don’t like pairing a knob with none of the parameters, in this case when you turn the knob, it has no effect.
Expression pedals input supports all passive linear and logarithmic pedals, calibration option added to the interface - Incoming Note On and CC MIDI messages can be mapped to functions, allowing control without WiFi: scale switching, MIDI set selection, sound set selection, slider adjustments

#### Available parameters to control
Function: The settings that can be put on a knob or pedal.

#### MIDI event
Function: Chooses which kind of incoming MIDI message drives an assigned parameter: note on, note off, control change or aftertouch. It lets an external MIDI device do what a knob or pedal does.
### Ports
Function: The MIDI routing settings: what the instrument accepts, what it sends, and what it passes through.
#### Midi input enabled
Function: Lets the instrument receive MIDI from a connected device, so an external sequencer or keyboard can play its sounds.
Enable MIDI input messages when it is switched on.
#### Midi output enabled
Function: Lets the instrument send MIDI when you play it, so it can drive a synth or a computer. With it off the instrument still sounds but sends nothing.
Enable MIDI output messages when it is switched on.
#### Midi thru enabled
Function: Passes MIDI arriving at the input straight back out again, so the Neotone can sit in the middle of a chain of devices without breaking it.
Send input messages to the output when it is switched on.
#### Midi thru filtered
Tooltip: Midi thru on free output channels only
Function: Holds back the passed-through messages that are on a channel your own MIDI set uses, so incoming notes meant for the Neotone are not echoed onward to the next device as well.
Filter MIDI output messages by channels (set instrument channels in the MIDI Mapping menu) when it is switched on.
#### Midi active sensing messages
Tooltip: Send active sensing messages. Does not need most of the case.
Function: Sends the periodic keep-alive message some MIDI hardware expects, so a receiving device does not decide the connection has dropped.
